For patients travelling from Europe

Medical Treatment in India for European Patients

If you're based in Germany, France, the Netherlands, or elsewhere in Western or Northern Europe, private treatment at home is usually fast — the real barrier is cost. Here's an honest look at how much you'd save travelling to India instead, and exactly how the journey works.

Be honest about what you're comparing

Self-pay private healthcare in Germany and similar countries is genuinely efficient — specialist appointments in under two weeks and surgery scheduled within days, not months. We won't pretend otherwise. The case for travelling to India isn't about avoiding a wait; it's that the same procedure, at an accredited hospital, typically costs a fraction of the price.

What the price difference actually looks like

A knee replacement package in Germany — surgery, a week of hospitalisation, and rehabilitation — runs around $27,000. Our packages for the same procedure start from $7,000, inclusive of hospital care, transfers, and a supervised Kerala recovery stay. For cardiac and bariatric procedures, the gap is similarly wide:

Our joint replacement package, fully inclusive, starting price

  • Cardiac care (bypass, valve repair/replacement, angioplasty) — from $9,000
  • Joint replacement (knee, hip) — from $7,000
  • Bariatric surgery — from $5,500

Every quote is itemised in writing for your specific case before you commit — see the full package breakdown on our packages page.

Where you're starting from matters

Knee replacement across Europe generally ranges from around $8,000 to $27,000 depending on the country, and this pitch is strongest if you're comparing against Western or Northern European private pricing — Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and similar. If you're based in Poland, the Czech Republic, or elsewhere in Eastern Europe, domestic private treatment is often already priced closer to what we offer, so the case for travelling further to India is more about the supervised Kerala recovery than the cost gap. We'd rather tell you that upfront than oversell the comparison.

What about my health insurance?

Most European statutory and private health insurance covers treatment within your home country or the EU/EEA, not elective self-pay procedures in India. A handful of supplementary international policies do include reimbursement for pre-approved treatment abroad — it's worth checking your policy's small print before you travel. In practice, most of our European patients pay the hospital directly, and we can provide the itemised invoices most insurers ask for if you plan to claim afterwards.

Flights from major European hubs

Direct flights from Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam and Munich to Delhi typically run 8-9 hours. Onward connections to Chennai usually add one stop, most often via Delhi or a Gulf hub like Dubai or Doha. We confirm the most practical routing once your treating hospital and dates are set, and arrange airport pickup for you and any attendant.

The visa step for European passport holders

Every European nationality needs an Indian Medical Visa (M-Visa) to travel for treatment — EU membership or Schengen access doesn't change this. The application is built around a formal invitation letter from your treating hospital, which we coordinate once your case has been reviewed and a treatment plan is confirmed. Most applicants also need a passport valid for at least six months beyond travel dates, passport-style photographs meeting Indian visa specifications, and proof of sufficient funds for the visit. A companion travelling with you applies separately for a Medical Attendant Visa (MX-Visa), linked to your application. See our full Medical Visa guide for the complete document checklist and realistic processing timelines.

Where you'll be treated

We refer European patients into the same vetted hospital network used for every case — Apollo Hospitals and MIOT International in Chennai, and Medanta and Narayana Health, matched to your specific procedure. Full detail on each is on our hospitals page.

Recovery before you fly home

Rather than flying home straight after discharge, most patients spend a supervised recovery stay in Kerala — physiotherapy and Ayurvedic therapy suited to the procedure, in a setting built for healing. See how recovery works.

Costs, flight routings and visa requirements above are general information current at the time of writing, sourced from published pricing guides for comparison purposes, and will vary by your specific case, chosen clinic, and current embassy requirements. We confirm your exact visa route, travel plan and a written cost estimate once you send your medical reports.
