For patients travelling from Nigeria

Medical Treatment in India for Nigerian Patients

India is the single most common overseas medical destination for Nigerian patients — more Nigerians travel to India for treatment each year than to any other country. If you're weighing your options after a difficult diagnosis, or trying to plan a joint replacement or cardiac procedure your family can actually afford, here's exactly how the journey from Nigeria works, step by step.

Why so many Nigerian patients choose India over other destinations

Compared to South Africa, the UK, or private treatment at home, India offers advanced cardiac, orthopedic and bariatric care at a fraction of the cost — typically 60–80% less than equivalent treatment in the US, UK or Gulf private hospitals — without a long, uncertain wait list. The hospitals in our network (see below) run dedicated international patient desks used to treating patients from Nigeria and across West Africa, with English-speaking staff throughout.

Flights from Nigeria to your treating hospital

There are no direct flights from Nigeria to Chennai or Delhi, so your journey will have one connection. The most common routings Nigerian patients use are:

  • Lagos or Abuja → Addis Ababa → Chennai/Delhi on Ethiopian Airlines — often the shortest total travel time;
  • Lagos → Dubai → Chennai/Delhi on Emirates, with a longer but very comfortable layover option;
  • Lagos or Abuja → Doha → Chennai/Delhi on Qatar Airways.

We confirm the most practical routing and help plan your itinerary once your treating hospital and travel dates are set, and arrange airport pickup on arrival in India for you and any attendant travelling with you.

The visa step: what Nigerian patients need to know

You'll apply for an Indian Medical Visa (M-Visa) through the Indian High Commission in Abuja or the Indian Consulate in Lagos. The application is built around a formal invitation letter from your treating hospital, which we coordinate directly with the hospital once your case has been reviewed and a treatment plan is confirmed — this is usually the step that determines how quickly you can travel. A companion travelling with you applies separately for a Medical Attendant Visa (MX-Visa). For the full document checklist and timeline, see our Medical Visa guide.

What treatment typically costs, in real numbers

Every quote is written and itemised for your specific case, but these are the starting ranges we work from for the procedures Nigerian patients most often enquire about:

  • Cardiac care (bypass, valve repair/replacement, angioplasty) — from $9,000
  • Joint replacement (knee, hip) — from $7,000
  • Bariatric surgery — from $5,500

Each package bundles the hospital stay with a supervised Kerala recovery stint, transfers, and a dedicated coordinator — see the full breakdown on our packages page. Most hospitals accept international wire transfer and major cards for the treatment fee; we flag any bank or currency-conversion charges to expect before you commit.

Where you'll be treated

We refer Nigerian patients into the same vetted hospital network we use for every patient — Apollo Hospitals and MIOT International in Chennai, and Medanta and Narayana Health, chosen for your specific procedure and history. See our full hospitals page for detail on each.

Recovery, before you fly home

After discharge, most patients move to a supervised Ayurvedic recovery stay in Kerala before flying back to Nigeria — proper physiotherapy, procedure-specific therapies, and rest that a hospital ward can't provide, so you travel home genuinely recovered rather than just discharged. See how recovery works.

Flight routings, visa steps and costs above are general information current at the time of writing and will vary by airline schedule, your specific case, and current embassy requirements. We confirm the exact routing, visa checklist and written cost estimate for your case directly once you send your reports.
