For patients travelling from the Gulf
Medical Treatment in India for UAE & Gulf Patients
For patients based in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain, India is one of the closest — and by far the most affordable — places to get advanced cardiac, orthopedic or bariatric surgery without compromising on hospital quality. Here's what the journey actually looks like from the Gulf.
The flight is shorter than most people expect
Direct flights from Dubai or Abu Dhabi to Chennai or Delhi run around 3.5–4 hours — similar to a domestic Gulf-to-Europe hop, not a long-haul ordeal. For cardiac and other time-sensitive cases, this short flight is a genuine advantage over travelling further afield for treatment.
Flight times from across the Gulf
You don't need to be based in the UAE for this to be a short trip. Direct or one-stop flight times to Delhi from the wider Gulf are all in a similar range:
- Riyadh: around 4 hours direct
- Doha: around 3.5 hours direct
- Kuwait City: around 3.5–4 hours direct
- Muscat: around 3 hours direct — one of the shortest routes in the region
- Manama: around 3.5 hours direct
Connections to Chennai from any of these cities typically add one short domestic or regional leg. We confirm the most practical routing once your treating hospital and travel dates are set.
The visa step: based on your passport, not your residence
This is the detail Gulf-based patients most often get wrong: the Indian Medical Visa is issued based on your nationality, not where you currently live. A large share of our patients writing to us from the UAE and wider Gulf are expatriates — holding Indian, Filipino, Egyptian, Pakistani or other passports — and each nationality has its own application process and documents. We check your specific requirement before anything is booked, and coordinate the hospital invitation letter that the M-Visa application is built around. See our full Medical Visa guide for the document checklist.
Why the cost gap is so large, even against private Gulf hospitals
Private healthcare in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar is high quality but priced accordingly. A total knee replacement in Dubai typically runs AED 40,000–120,000 (roughly $11,000–$33,000), averaging closer to AED 65,000. Cardiac bypass surgery (CABG) at a private Dubai hospital typically starts around AED 150,000 (about $41,000) and can exceed AED 300,000 for complex cases. The same procedures at one of our accredited partner hospitals in India typically cost 60–80% less, often with a shorter wait to get on the surgical schedule.

What about my Gulf health insurance?
Most UAE and wider-Gulf private and employer health insurance plans are written for treatment within the country of residence, and either exclude overseas care entirely or reimburse only a limited portion of it. Very few plans cover elective procedures abroad. In practice, most of our Gulf-based patients pay the hospital directly and, where their policy allows, claim partial reimbursement afterwards — we recommend confirming your policy's overseas-treatment clause before you travel, and we're happy to provide the itemised documentation most insurers ask for.
Where you'll be treated
We refer Gulf-based patients into the same vetted network used for every case — Apollo Hospitals and MIOT International in Chennai, and Medanta and Narayana Health, matched to your specific procedure. Full detail on each is on our hospitals page.
Recovery before you fly home
Rather than flying straight home after discharge, most patients spend a supervised recovery stay in Kerala — proper physiotherapy and Ayurvedic therapy suited to the procedure, in a setting built for healing rather than a hotel room. See how recovery works.
